The society – Society for People’s Action and Rural Development in Himalayan Area (SPARDHA) was formed with a vision – the socio-economic development of the region. The reason for economic backwardness was due to lack of livelihood opportunities and below subsistence level of agriculture  after putting in backbreaking hard work due to tough terrain.  In this context, bee keeping was adopted as a tool for the economic transformation of the region. The reason for adopting bee keeping as a tool was that this practice does not require much resources as compared to other activities.  The vision is simply to promote bee keeping in the region and motivate people to take it up as a livelihood option. Bee keeping is a low demanding practice and can be started with a minimal investment. The only requirement is basic level of skill, which can be obtained by taking a one-two weeks’ training and then learning by doing.                                                                                                                                                                                Bee keeping has a vast potential to change the economic scenario of the region. Bee keeping has multiple benefits like honey production, enhancement in crop yield due to cross pollination, by products like resin, wax, pollen and royal jelly etc.
